Small races are the way to go

Mind you, the only "big" races I have ever done were the Susan Komen 5Ks in Raleigh and the two half marathons I've run. Even then, the two halves weren't as large some as some of the other races across the country. Anyway, yesterday morning I ran a locally sponsored 5K trail run out at the Infirmary Mound Park near Granville. About 100 people did the 5K. Thanks to that low attendance, I get to claim something I have never claimed before in my life. Yesterday, while I did not achieve my best ever 5K time, I did place THIRD in my age group. WHAT? Yep, Third. I have never EVER finished in the top three in my age group for any running/tri event. Due to the small size of the race, only the top 5 males and top 5 females won a prize. But damn - just seeing my name there is enough prize for me. (now all you internet stalkers know my full name!!)

With my awesomeness aside (hee hee), the race was actually fantastic. Not many people, a beautiful trail/course and doing races close to home just can't be beat. The trail was wonderful - very hilly, some of the path through tree covered areas, some along open meadows. Absolutely beautiful. And it was definitely challenging. Miles 1-2 seemed pretty reasonable, but after you hit that mile 2 marker - holy crap. There was some serious hills in there. It also seemed like most of the last mile was a gradual uphill. I will admit there were a couple walk breaks in there. Makes me wish I would have pushed through a bit more, as me and Miss Second Place weren't that far apart on our times. Oh well - just something to always keep in mind!!!

So, thanks goes out to Pink Strides Trail Run - great event in a great location. I would totally do this one again. And next time in less than 10 minutes per mile :-)
